A Day of Sustainability, Reflection and a view to Being Well

This International Museum Day is a tribute, a day of reflection and remembrance for all and especially for one we lost this month. One lone ranger, visionary, optimist, doer. George Thompson completed his earthly journey this month at the youthful age of 55. But before doing so, Mr. Thompson engineered the revitalization of heritage tourism in Belize through the creation, preservation, consolidation, care and maintenance of infrastructure to support balanced cultural, economic and conservation uses at archaeological reserves throughout the country of Belize.

George recognized that people from the local community are the experts in their own cultural history, ecosystems and conservation practices. He used a human centered approach to develop trusting relationships between the archaeological sites, their caretakers and the surrounding neighborhoods. George took time to ensure that each site team understands the importance of their role and work in the local, regional, and global context of a developing tourism based economy in a fledgling 40 something year old nation.

He worked to bring balance to the changing ethic of archaeological research and investigation and helped to solve a myriad of unanswerable questions about how best to simultaneously protect and promote archaeological resources within Belize.

Everyone loved George. He was patient, kind, and thoughtful. A person you could depend on for an honest answer to almost any question. But most of all, George was always planning... planning for the future... planning a new idea... planning how to make something function better. He was engineering a better life for everyone with consideration of all our constantly moving parts.

This International Museum Day is a tribute to George Thompson who absolutely created well being and sustainability in cultural heritage sites across Belize by his leadership, kindness and by listening to and engaging the wisdom of the people.

This National Gardening Day, Broward-based Belizean-Canadian artist Tara Chadwick invites the public to #PapalotlProject: a site specific art installation featuring pollinator friendly seed planting and intergenerational migration story sharing.

During earth day week and the UN permanent forum on Indigenous issues, this multidisciplinary interaction encourages participants to bring seeds and stories and come ready to cogenerate a future of abundance.

Sustainable Development Goal Action for World Water Week

Last week marked the intersection of World Water Day, National Ag Day, World Forest Day and the first day of spring here in the Northern Hemisphere of Mother Earth. It was also the one year anniversary of the #PapalotlProject's "Art of Gardening" intergenerational science and story sharing initiative launched by Cogenerate Innovation Fellow Tara Chadwick, in collaboration with the City of Miramar Community Services Department.* 

Starting last February, #PapalotlProject began to engage with elders and preschoolers across Broward County and beyond to increase awareness and appreciation of our diverse cultural heritage. Over the year-long pilot project, an ongoing conversation around science, art and healthy living was established among program participants, staff, and families. Each season, topics such as urban agricultural cycles, cultural food traditions, migration, hibernation and pollination were shared among and between the diverse generations and geographies in which we are rooted.

Last week's series of UN recognized, interactive art installations featured a decorative take home seed planter disbursing native milkweed, beans, sunflowers and perennial marigolds to homes throughout the county. Participatory evaluation revealed a deep appreciation for the opportunity to engage in culture and art based, intergenerational learning activities. The final public interaction for the #PapalotlProject "Art of Gardening" pilot will take place on April 20th at 10:30-11:30 am in Miramar.
